Integration of Centers for Spiritual Living March 1, 2011!
In an era when religious denominations are splitting into smaller and smaller sects, International Centers for Spiritual Living and United Centers for Spiritual Living have reunited after 57 years! Science of Mind, also known as Religious Science, founded in the 1920's by philosopher Ernest Holmes, functioned as two competing organizations for more than 50 years. March 1, 2011 delegates at their historic joint annual conference in San Diego aproved "integration" of the two organizations with 98% of the vote.
The two organizations have been laying the groundwork for this event over the past eight years, both changing their names and contributing to discussion and development of the merger proposals developed by nearly 400 volunteers. The process, led impeccably by both groups' leaders, President, Kenn Gordon, ICSL, and Community Spiritual Leader, Kathy Hearn, UCSL, has been thorough, transparent, inclusive and extremely healing for all parties involved. "We are a philosophy that teaches unity, so it is time for us to walk our talk" said Rev. Dr Kathy Hearn. A module team studied and submitted recommendations for each functional department of the organization and this input became the basis for the new corporate documents overwhelmingly and joyously approved March 1st.
Science of Mind is part of the New Thought Movement, started in the mid-1800's by Transcendentalists like Ralph Waldo Emerson and continued into the 20th century with the teachings of Emmet Fox, Napoleon Hill, Emma Curtis Hopkins and Holmes. The cornerstone of New Thought is a teaching of unity, yet despite this, the two factions of Science of Mind broke apart in the 1950's over organizational differences. "We have the opportunity here to heal the wounds of the past," said Kenn Gordon.
During Ernest Holmes' life and ministry in Los Angeles, celebrities such as Cary Grant, Peggy Lee, Cecil B DeMille and Doris Day followed his teaching. More recently, Science of Mind has influenced such luminaries in the field of self development as Wayne Dyer, Jack Canfield, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Beckwith and Marianne Williamson.
The integrated movement of Centers for Spiritual Living has over 400 spiritual centers in 29 countries, and publishes two inspirational monthly magazines with a combined readership of 100,000.
We have a big vision for providing spiritual tools and transforming personal lives," said Hearn. "We realize that our influence is much more powerful now that we've integrated than it has been on our own." The organization has a vision of touching 100 million lives by 2017. "I know Ernest Homes would be proud today," added Gordon. |
